The Senior Administrative Assistant will report to the Agency Director of Culture+Commerce. They must have the ability work in a fast-paced media environment, making key decisions while using sound judgment. Excellent communication and technical skills are a must. Previous assistant experience required, agency experience is ideal.

Responsibilities:

  • General administrative support

  • Daily communication with designers

  • Oversee designer commitments and calendars

  • Accounting management (billing)

Position Overview:

 

The Digital Marketing Manager reports to the Agency Director of Culture+Commerce and is responsible for leveraging content to generate significant visibility for Culture+Commerce and its designers. With a focus on developing digital marketing strategies, they will gain attention from desired brand partners, increase traffic to culturecommerce.com, and oversee the content and management of a semi-monthly newsletter.

 

RESPONSIBILITIES:

 

Digital Marketing

  • Oversee all digital, email, and social media campaigns

  • Develop marketing concepts for brand partnerships in conjunction with the Agency Director and the partnerships team

  • Manage traffic acquisition and search strategy (SEM, SEO, affiliation, paid social)

  • Analyze, measure, and report on the success of marketing campaigns using KPIs to ensure efforts have yielded significant results

  • Manage all website content, including designer portfolios and press calendar, to enhance brand visibility and business development opportunities for C+C designers

  • Work closely with C+C Partnerships Manager on preparation of proposals, pitch decks, and any other marketing materials as needed

  • Create compelling case studies as needed to show value and results of working with C+C and its designers

  • Handle all other digital marketing tasks as assigned

 

Tracking, Measurement, List Management:

  • Oversee the tracking and creation of digital clips for all media placements related to C+C designer collaborations (print, digital, and broadcast)

  • Create regular reports with all placements and executive summary of results

  • Create and manage contact lists for digital campaigns including collaboration launches, events, and general agency announcements

 

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree required

  • 2-4+ years experience managing Digital (web marketing, website project management, user experience)

  • Familiarity with the cultural media landscape (art, fashion, design, and architecture)

Overview


Surface Media is looking for an ambitious, go-getting Social Media Editor to join our growing team in our New York offices. Reporting to the News Editor, the Social Media Editor will be responsible for setting and executing our social strategies, working with both the edit and marketing teams to increase our social footprint across all platforms, including (but not limited to) Facebook, Instagram, LinkedIn, and Twitter. A strong knowledge of social media is essential. An interest in art, design, architecture, and fashion is preferred.


Responsibilities


  • Manage day-to-day social media activities across all social channels, including (but not limited to) Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, and LinkedIn

  • Define and maintain the brand voice and vision throughout all conversations

Requirements

The Digital Marketing Analyst reports to the Executive Director, Communications and Marketing and works closely across all teams and with members of the marketing department to oversee all email and social media marketing campaigns, manage and grow the company’s user database, strategize on how to utilize the data in most effective and efficient ways, and providing strong analytics to the various teams within the company to inform decision making and strategy.


Responsibilities


Analytics


• Own day-to-day measurement, reporting, and optimization recommendations for subscriber, partner, and membership acquisition and create weekly reports for leadership on overall audience growth and engagement

• Provide recommendations to clients on meeting their goals, monitor performance of display ads/digital paid content, and prepare detailed reports for partners following digital/social campaigns

• Create and maintain a social media calendar and posting schedule with input from all areas of company

• Develop and implement marketing strategies that optimize Surface Media’s social media accounts including Facebook, LinkedIn, Twitter, and Instagram for growing and engaging audience

• Work closely with editorial team on content marketing efforts and integrating editorial promotion within overall plan

• Propose and manage social budget and analyze, plan, execute, and optimize paid advertising

Qualifications


• Bachelor’s degree and 3+ years of experience in digital marketing as an analyst and/or strategist

OVERVIEW

The Senior Events Manager reports to the Senior Director of Marketing and works to execute all events on behalf of the Surface Media. The position involves working across all teams at the company to produce high-profile events with its partners and to create new events concepts that help generate revenue and elevate the Surface Media brand.


RESPONSIBILITIES


EVENT PRODUCTION

  • Produce all Surface Media events from small private dinners of 20 and large parties of 300 to company-wide retreats and other internal events with input and approval from all stakeholders

  • Maximize use of event management software to automate and produce events optimally

  • Establish goals, budget, timeline, and source venues per each event's requirements and budget

  • Handle ordering of food, beverage, flowers, signage, and decor with stakeholder approvals and provide on-site management of staff

  • Deliver COIs and location agreements as needed for each event

  • Create run of show and brief Surface representatives on roles during event in advance

  • Execute follow up activities including CEO gifts, thank you cards, and approved recaps for partners to be delivered by date agreed upon in advance

  • Create checklists as necessary for event staff and handlers, overall guidelines for events, and follow up steps for each event to ensure outcomes for Surface Media

  • Ensure all vendors are paid on time according to terms of agreements


PARTNERSHIPS

  • Negotiate partnership agreements with venues and other vendors to minimize overall events costs and to bring value to both Surface Media and partners

  • Ensure deliverables and expectations are met by Surface Media on all executed agreements

  • Serve as point of contact for Surface/editor participation in relevant industry events negotiating a presence for Surface talent as well as visibility for the brand and magazines


CONCEPT DEVELOPMENT/ANNUAL PLANNING

  • Work with Senior Director to create a robust annual marketing plan informed by the editorial calendar that provides unique and compelling opportunities for brand partners to align with and promote the Surface brand during all relevant happenings globally (fashion weeks, art and design fairs, and other high-profile cultural events)

  • Contribute ideas regularly for new event and/or marketing opportunities that have potential to generate new revenue streams for the company and drive subscription sales


EVENT MARKETING/COVERAGE

  • Work to ensure that Surface Media and Surface magazine are appropriately represented at all events

  • Serve as internal client with the design team for programs, invites, menus, signage, etc. ensuring that they deliver on time and are produced within budget

  • Ensure that all partners and stakeholders approve designs

  • Coordinate closely with Events Coordinator and outside vendors on all PR needs including photography and videography


DATABASE/GUEST LIST MANAGEMENT

  • Curate guest lists, tailoring audience for partner and brand requirements, maximizing reach

  • Use software to create guest lists for events and communicate with guests on details

  • Track RSVPs for each event and ensure new attendees are added to Surface database


QUALIFICATIONS

  • 3-5 years experience producing events in NYC or other large metropolitan areas (Miami, LA, Chicago, Washington DC); experience producing events across multiple cities nationally and internationally preferred

  • Expertise in utilizing various event and guest management software and its application including Zkipster, Splash, Salesforce Marketing Cloud required

  • Strong ability to negotiate partnership agreements on behalf of the brand

  • Understanding of the design and/or media industry

  • Appreciation for and knowledge of the worlds of art, design, architecture, fashion, and travel as well as corresponding cultural events worldwide

OVERVIEW


As the Director of Finance, you will help to drive the business through regular forecasting and analysis – creating and developing financial models, providing insight into business performance, and carrying out ad-hoc analyses for senior group and business unit management. We are looking for someone who has a technology focused mindset that is a financial modeling ninja, proficient in identifying key conclusions and recommendations through analysis and effectively communicating those to senior management and investors. This job requires knowledge of setting up dashboards and working with complex budget models.  The role will require you to be a business partner to Sales, Marketing and Content creation and understanding the metrics that matter to them.

 

Your main responsibilities include the day-to-day management and oversight of all financial and accounting activities, including: accounts payable, accounts receivables, cash management, preparing and posting journal entries, reconciling balance sheet and program, bank, and investment accounts, and payroll. You will also develop and track the annual budget, monitoring the company’s financial status and health, and communicate with senior leadership about trends, changes, and recommendations.


Responsibilities

Financial Management

  • Administer, manage and evaluate all financial activities, planning, systems and controls for the organization.

  • Oversee bookkeeping and day-to-day accounting work for the organization, including accounts payables, accounts receivables, journal entries, balance sheet, program accounts, bank and investment accounts- delegating responsibilities to Accounting Manager as appropriate

  • In conjunction with the Director of HR, you will be responsible for the oversight, review and execution of the organization’s bi-weekly payroll and commission payments

  • Responsible for the monthly/quarterly account reconciliations and other filings to ensure compliance

  • Analyze and present financial reports in an accurate and timely manner; clearly communicate monthly and annual financial statements, pro-formas and other financial reports as requested

  • Manage investor needs, as requested

  • Actively manage and forecast organizational cash flow, and monitor and access the organization’s line of credit to ensure financial stability

  • Develop and maintain financial accounting systems and work-flows for cash management, accounts payable, ac

Budget Management

  • In conjunction with the executive management team and business partners, develop and execute annual company-wide budgeting and planning process

  • Administer and review departmental financial plans and budgets, managing P&L reports

  • Monitor progress and changes and keep senior leadership abreast of the organization’s financial status

  • Analyze information, forecast sales against expenses and create annual budget plans

  • Analyze and monitor actual sales against projected sales, working with Sales department to ensure accurate future projections

  • In conjunction with the executive management team, develop and execute quarterly reviews and budget reforecasts


Administration

  • In conjunction with the Director of HR, manage appropriate benefits coverage

  • Lead Company’s relationships with insurance providers, bankers, external auditors, and payroll services

  • Perform all statutory reporting, including monthly sales tax filing, benefits reporting and annual tax preparation and reporting

  • Work proactively to improve the operating and financial performance of the Company, rethinking existing strategies, processes, or structures, when necessary


Supervisory Responsibilities

Qualifications

Surface Media is seeking a Photo and Multimedia Editor to join our growing team. The right candidate will combine an eye for elevated storytelling and on-trend taste with a multifaceted photo and video skill set that can be applied to editorial, social, native, and partner content. As the media landscape transforms, we are looking for the Photo and Multimedia Editor who can keep our image and video offerings at the forefront of technology, from ideation to completion. We are looking at the best ways to produce content for each company need, from a traditional DSLR plus equipment setup with a commissioned photographer, to a one-person iPhone video shoot, to a quick in-house shot by the Photo and Multimedia Editor, as well as sourcing the best, highest-quality pickup imagery available to round out our coverage. The Photo and Multimedia Editor will be in charge of generating innovative, future-forward ideas and solutions to advance and streamline how we capture, collect, and manage photo and video content.


The ideal candidate is highly motivated and ready to hit the ground running. Must be a team player who thrives on tight deadlines, with impeccable organization and communication skills. Must have fluency in photo/video best practices and an ongoing knowledge of new ways to use technology and equipment for the digital media/publishing and marketing space, and a resourceful desire to continue learning new skills. ROLES & RESPONSIBILITIES

Photo and Video Shoots:

  • Hiring and assigning photographers and videographers (contributors) for all Surface Media platforms: Surface magazine, Watch Journal, Centre magazine, SurfaceMag.com, Surface Studios, Design Dialogues talks, and other brand events

  • Working with the production manager to coordinate calendar schedules between subject, contributors, and our production schedules; organizing shoots nationally and internationally

  • Ensuring that contributors adhere to brand guidelines and creative direction

  • Managing relationships with contributors

  • Working with the production manager to make sure that contributors have signed all documents needed for compensation

  • Managing budgets, constantly assessing best contributor, production style, and equipment for the job, using strong negotiation skills when necessary


In-house Production:

  • Research, source and acquire all pickup media for Surface Media content projects

  • Work with editors from across the company to ensure each story includes the best and most appropriate media

  • Select and edit photos in each publication with oversight from the Design Director

  • Shoot several columns per publication/outlet, as well as photo/video assets for social media

  • Be responsible for any light retouching and color-correcting before photos are published for shoots, pickup, and in-house media.

  • Ensuring that our media is of high quality, resolution, focus, clarity, and the like.

  • Finalize short video pieces, as well as video shot in-house or by editors, working with freelancers when necessary


Photo and video management:

  • Management and organization of media storage and archiving

  • Management of image production via outsourcing partners to prepare images to spec for print and digital usage

  • Management of video production when external videographers and editors are used

  • Management of other relevant freelancers when a project requires them


Equipment:

  • Manage all company photo and video equipment including cameras, lenses, etc.

  • Set up and manage an in-house photo/video studio


Writing:

  • Write captions, or oversee the writing of captions, for all photos used in each Surface Media publication

  • Compile photo/video credits and ensure their correct usage across channels

  • Write briefs for photographers and videographers under the guidance of the Design Director

  • Compile and distribute call sheets for all shoots

  • Prepare production plans for complex shoots with input from various teams involved

  • Manage our creative contracts, updating when needed


Social Media

  • Help ensure a high level of image and video quality across our social media channels, as well as produce original content for each of our brands


Events

  • Work with the marketing and events teams to confirm consistent photography and video talent and execution for all Surface Media events

  • Shoot photo and video for Surface Media events as needed


REQUIREMENTS

  • 3–5 years of industry experience (working at a magazine, media company, digital/advertising agency, etc.)

  • Bachelor’s degree in Photography or related arts/media/applied communication field

  • A portfolio of own photography, plus tears/examples of work produced/edited at previous jobs. Video and social media examples are a plus.

  • A passion for photography, portraiture, film and visual storytelling

  • Knowledge of Surface Media and its diverse properties, with active interest in the arenas that we cover, and experience researching them for content (design, architecture, fashion, travel, etc.)

  • Relationships with a range of photographers and video contributors to bring fresh talent to our creative pool

  • Resourcefulness, diligence, attention to detail, creative problem-solving, and organizational skills, plus strong interpersonal, communication, and negotiation skills

  • Ability to manage multiple projects both daily and long-term, and to adapt to changing priorities

Position Overview


As a member of the Communications and Marketing team, the Distribution and Subscription Manager is responsible for proposing and closing deals with approved brand partners to increase magazine distribution in target markets as well as for creating and implementing successful marketing strategies to increase subscribers for all print and digital Surface Media platforms including Surface magazine, Watch Journal, e-newsletters, and other offers.


RESPONSIBILITIES


Distribution

  • Work closely with partnerships team on agreements with hospitality brands to grow in-room distribution of Surface magazine and ensure execution

  • Work closely with operations team to manage all distributors and to identify and add new distribution partners regularly

  • Track distribution closely and ensure that all marketing materials have most up-to-date information

  • Organize shipment of all extra issue requests as well as track and ensure fulfillment of paid issue orders

  • Assist in market research to inform growth strategy for Surface distribution nationwide and beyond and execute based on plans


Subscription

  • Manage, execute, and analyze all aspects of circulation including new subscriptions, renewals, complimentary subscriptions, and free-to-paid conversion programs

  • Work closely with Senior Marketing Manager on quarterly subscription goals and execute daily, weekly, monthly tactics to grow digital and print subscribers

  • Develop and execute VIP subscribers program outlining benefits and ensuring delivery

  • Manage, maintain, and communicate all circulation data as needed including a weekly report on subscriptions

  • Actively monitor retention rates and identify and execute best practices for retention

  • Maintain in-house mailing lists and coordinate with printers as needed ensuring proper data is prepared and sent on schedule

  • Identify and resolve problems related to subscription fulfillment and management

  • Coordinate subscriber-related business processes between marketing, operations, and  production vendors

  • Serve as customer support contact for all subscription issues and questions

  • Manage interns and freelance staff as needed

  • Perform all other duties as assigned


Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree required

  • Experience in media and/or publishing with a background in audience development/circulation management

  • Superior sales orientation with excellent follow-through and organization

Position Overview

Surface Media is seeking a Digital Designer to join our growing team and play a major role in our company’s transition to a digital-first operation. The right candidate will combine a strong, on-brand creative aesthetic and high taste level with a full stack of front-end web development skills. Working under the Design Director, the Digital Designer will develop and deliver innovative concepts across all Surface Media brands. Expect to work closely with our Marketing/Events and Native Content teams to ideate and develop exciting digital executions, then help design the presentations used to sell them. Projects will be for both our in-house platforms as well as for partner brands. As the company’s digital presence grows, the Digital Designer will also work on new concepts and ideas for delivering our digital editorial content in innovative ways.

The ideal candidate is a multifaceted and highly motivated Digital Designer who’s ready to hit the ground running. Must be a team player who thrives on tight deadlines, with proven experience translating feedback into best-in-class work. Must have fluency in digital best practices and an ongoing knowledge of current design trends in the digital media/publishing and marketing space. ROLES & RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • All digital design work in the company: email newsletters, web-based marketing materials, web pages, social/digital media content and cross-platform assets for brand initiatives

  • Extensive work for mock-ups and pitches

  • Presentation layout (Keynote and web-based proposals)

  • Execute innovative and creative ideas to advance Surface Media’s brand vision in the digital space

  • Partner with other creative team members to unite the visual style consistency across the brand

REQUIREMENTS:


  • 3-5 years of industry experience (working in a digital agency, media company, advertising agency, production studio, etc.)

  • Bachelor’s degree in Communication Design/Graphic Design/Web Design or related field

  • A strong portfolio of digital work

  • A geek-level passion for pure graphic design, typography, and grid-based work, plus the vision to apply those skills in the digital space

  • Knowledge of the Surface flagship brand and the diverse properties of Surface Media, with active interest in the arenas that we cover

  • Resourcefulness, diligence, attention to detail, creative problem-solving, and organizational skills, plus strong interpersonal and communication skills

  • Ability to manage multiple projects both daily and long-term, and adapt to changing priorities

  • Excellent skills in Adobe Creative Suite

  • Proficiency in Keynote

  • Working knowledge of motion graphics and animation

  • Demonstrated knowledge of and experience using web-based tools, technologies, practices, and web authoring software such as Wordpress, HTML, and CSS to create web templates and style sheets, websites/pages, work with content management systems and web features. Must have demonstrated visual design skills to support web marketing activity such as banner ads, website graphics, e-newsletters, etc.

Marketing and Production Coordinator Overview:


Reporting to the Executive Director of Communications and Marketing, the Marketing and Production Coordinator serves as the marketing department’s project manager and is responsible for working closely with the design team to manage the development and delivery of all Surface Media marketing materials. The Marketing and Production Coordinator is the primary liaison between Surface Media’s marketing team and its design/digital teams and ensures that projects are delivered on time, within budget, and that they meet quality standards set by the department.


Responsibilities:


  • Manage workflow and production of all print, digital, and multimedia projects from point of request through delivery for business side of Surface Media including all presentations, media kits, proposals, event invitations, ad campaigns, and other materials needed for company marketing initiatives

  • Create schedules for all jobs as well as an annual schedule for the department with deadlines for key deliverables ensuring that protocol is followed for all jobs

  • Ensure that projects are completed according to set timelines and budgets

  • Draft content (write copy, identify imagery) or work with internal client on content as needed for all materials

  • Create process and workflow and manage accordingly while continually working to optimize processes and systems

  • Schedule and run intake meetings as needed setting agenda to understand internal client goals and to ensure that relevant information is shared with design team

  • Assist design director with assigning work to team based on priorities and workloads

  • Ensure that appropriate staff members within marketing/sales/editorial are assigned to project teams when projects or campaigns are initiated by clients and that appropriate stakeholders are informed of status updates throughout the process

  • Maximize utilization of project management tools currently in place and advise on best practices regarding internal systems for project management if changes are needed

  • Establish mechanisms for evaluation of key projects based on set goals

The Senior Marketing Manager reports to the Executive Director, Communications and Marketing and is responsible for leveraging all content to generate significant visibility for Surface Media and its titles. With a focus on developing digital marketing strategies that drive subscription sales, social media engagement, and traffic to surfacemag.com, the Senior Marketing Manager also creates compelling marketing platforms for partners and develops and executes marketing plans for major company initiatives.


RESPONSIBILITIES:


Digital Marketing

  • Oversee digital advertising, email, and social media campaigns and develop marketing concepts for brand partnerships in conjunction with the Executive Director and the partnerships team

  • Analyze, measure, and report on the success of marketing campaigns using KPIs to ensure efforts have yielded significant results

  • Manage content for the external website related to company identity, marketing, events, and partnership opportunities


Marketing Concepts and Materials:

  • Work with Executive Director to create a robust annual marketing plan informed by the editorial calendar that provides unique and compelling opportunities for brand partners to align with and promote the Surface brand during all relevant happenings globally (fashion weeks, art and design fairs, and other high-profile cultural events)

  • Contribute ideas regularly for new event and/or marketing opportunities that have potential to generate new revenue streams for the company and drive subscription sales

  • Work with partners to ensure that all co-branded marketing materials comply with Surface Media brand guidelines

  • Work closely with Marketing and Production Coordinator on preparation of proposals, media kits, and other marketing materials as directed by sales and marketing leadership team

  • Create compelling case studies as needed to show value and results of partnership opportunities

  • Handle all other marketing tasks as assigned


Media Relations Strategy and Outreach

  • Work with Executive Director and PR partners to develop publicity strategies that target appropriate contacts/outlets for all issue launches as well as for all co-branded events

  • Manage all pre- and post-event media outreach by overseeing tip sheets and post-event releases and ensuring timely distribution

  • Strategize press outreach for issue launches

  • Handle all media inquiries and requests related to Surface Media promptly as needed

  • Identify media opportunities to expand the profile of Surface Media and its editors


Event Marketing and Promotion:

  • Develop overall marketing plans for all Surface signature events and co-branded events

  • Contribute to guest list development for all events working closely with events and sales

  • Work closely with the Events Manager to arrange photography and create shot lists for all Surface Media events ensuring that photos meet partnership agreement terms and appropriately position Surface and Surface representatives for press purposes

  • Manage photography and videography on site when possible coordinating set-ups according to preapproved shot list and deliverables approved by digital and marketing directors

  • Edit photos for press purposes and ensure that photos and video footage is prepped to be serviced immediately following event to editorial/digital teams at Surface

  • Review social media campaigns with event partners and digital team ensuring optimal reach on all channels and that partner expectations are met

  • Draft talking points for senior Surface Media reps for all events

  • Coordinate with external PR agencies as needed


Tracking, Measurement, List Management:

  • Oversee the tracking and creation of digital clips for all media placements (print, digital, and broadcast)

  • Work with Digital Director to manage/update area of Surface magazine’s website that includes press on the company

  • Create monthly/quarterly reports with all placements and executive summary of results

  • Create and manage press contact lists for publicity campaigns including issue launches, events, and company announcements

  • Create a marketing dashboard and establish KPIs to track progress and to guide shifts in strategy as needed


Subscription Marketing and Distribution:

  • Develop and oversee marketing campaigns to drive subscription sales

  • Oversee programs for in-room partnerships with hospitality partners

  • Oversee distribution to existing venues and expand distribution to new outlets


Staff Management:

  • Hire and manage staff as needed for the marketing team and to handle distribution and subscriptions

  • Manage outside PR support and/or agencies as needed

  • Set goals for staff and conduct annual reviews as needed


Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree required; master’s degree preferred

  • 5-8 years experience in agency or in-house marketing and/or PR

  • Experience managing staff and to work somewhat independently required

  • Knowledge of cultural media landscape and working knowledge of art, fashion, design, and architecture press preferred
