The SEO Manager of Surface Media, reporting to the Director of Audience Development, is a key member of the Audience Development team and will play a pivotal role driving growth. This role will be an advocate for Search Engine Optimization (SEO) throughout the organization, working cross-functionally to increase overall search visibility and traffic, develop and implement technical SEO optimizations, and monitor and report on changes in page and keyword rankings, and organic traffic. 

Responsibilities:

  • Create the SEO roadmap, identifying growth opportunities and working with product development and other teams to drive execution.
  • Lead research and development of keyword targeting strategies in each content category.
  • Manage tagging (GA, GTM or other analytics platform) including overall strategy, implementation, xml sitemap optimization, and troubleshooting to ensure proper site indexing.
  • Optimize existing content and identify new opportunities. Work closely with the content team to advise in the development of content for the execution of hyper growth strategy.
  • Conduct technical audits of the site. Ensure site structure and pages are optimized to attract and engage those visitors that match the profile of the target audience.
  • Design and implement a link building strategy with our Communications, Marketing and PR teams, building link equity across an expanding portfolio of domestic and international keywords.
  • Monitor and maintain site health by tracking inbound links, 404 errors, broken external and internal links, and Googlebot crawl frequency.

The Vice President of Sales of Surface Media reporting to the CEO and a member of the Executive Leadership Team of the company, will be responsible for revenue across all Surface Media assets including print, digital, and experiential. The VP of Sales will be directly responsible for managing the Sales, Account Management and Sales Planning teams. The VP of Sales will work with the Executive Leadership Team to define business goals, KPIs and objective for the revenue organization and will then be responsible to meet and exceed them. The VP of Sales will work closely with Marketing, Audience Development and Revenue Operations teams as well as Content and Events leads to ensure business success. 

Responsibilities:

The Revenue Operations Lead will work closely with Marketing, Audience Development and Revenue Operations teams as well as Content and Events leads to ensure business success.

Surface Media is looking for a self-motivated Director of Content Operations to handle daily content department operations. Reporting to the VP of Content, the Director of Content Operations will supervise the content team and freelance contributors and manage departmental budgets and timelines.

A strong preference will be given to candidates with both online and print experience, especially in design, architecture, art, and fashion. We are seeking 5+ years’ experience as an editor or managing editor, confidence in pitching and writing fast and informative content (with an eye for SEO-friendly headlines and copy), flexibility, and a sharp eye for detail. Daily digital publication experience preferred.


The Director of Content Operations Will:

  • Control schedules and enforcing deadlines across content department and products.

From cover stories and special editions to digital campaigns to events, Surface’s enterprise projects are ambitious, high quality, thoughtfully developed, and often conceptual in look, feel, and experience. 


The Special Projects Editor Will:

  • Act as an editorial liaison among the various teams in the company, shaping the projects and communicating the editorial strategy to marketing and sales.
  • Day to day, be responsible for a variety of duties, including project management, researching, writing, producing, and editing. On any given day, you might be tracking down a cover personality, maintaining a spreadsheet, creating a narrative for a tentpole event, or working with a team of writers and editors to produce and edit the rollout of a big feature package and coordinating with a designer and product manager to execute the project. You will collaborate closely with journalists across the newsroom, and liaise with other Surface Media departments such as marketing, product, and growth.

A native ad is editorial content created in partnership with an advertiser. Helming Surface Studios, the Commercial Editor will be the primary contact for all branded content campaigns and will work closely with sales, creative services, ad ops, and product development to create effective and engaging experiences. We are looking for an individual who is passionate about the creative process and capable of handling the entire campaign, including initial ideation in brainstorms for RFPs, managing client revisions, and evaluating metrics to perfect and advise on content strategy. The ideal candidate will also have a high appreciation design, fashion, art and culture. He or she will be expected to be on the cutting edge, monitoring the creative and media industries, content marketing industry news and developments, incorporating those elements into our programs and keeping the team apprised.


The Commercial Editor will:

  • Be present every step of the way, from ideation, to production, and to actual content output. 
  • Be able to consider the requirements and limitations of both the publisher and the advertiser.
  • Monitor the performance of content, ensuring that internal targets are reached, while also presenting insight reports on these. 
  • Represent Surface Media at events, briefings, and presentations, as well as photo or video shoots for native advertising projects.

Requirements:

Position Overview

Distribution

OVERVIEW

The Senior Events Manager reports to the Senior Director of Marketing and works to execute all events on behalf of the Surface Media. The position involves working across all teams at the company to produce high-profile events with its partners and to create new events concepts that help generate revenue and elevate the Surface Media brand.


RESPONSIBILITIES


EVENT PRODUCTION

  • Produce all Surface Media events from small private dinners of 20 and large parties of 300 to company-wide retreats and other internal events with input and approval from all stakeholders
  • Maximize use of event management software to automate and produce events optimally
  • Establish goals, budget, timeline, and source venues per each event's requirements and budget 
  • Handle ordering of food, beverage, flowers, signage, and decor with stakeholder approvals and provide on-site management of staff
  • Deliver COIs and location agreements as needed for each event
  • Create run of show and brief Surface representatives on roles during event in advance
  • Execute follow up activities including CEO gifts, thank you cards, and approved recaps for partners to be delivered by date agreed upon in advance
  • Create checklists as necessary for event staff and handlers, overall guidelines for events, and follow up steps for each event to ensure outcomes for Surface Media
  • Ensure all vendors are paid on time according to terms of agreements


PARTNERSHIPS

EVENT MARKETING/COVERAGE

  • Work to ensure that Surface Media and Surface magazine are appropriately represented at all events 
  • Serve as internal client with the design team for programs, invites, menus, signage, etc. ensuring that they deliver on time and are produced within budget 
  • Ensure that all partners and stakeholders approve designs
  • Coordinate closely with Events Coordinator and outside vendors on all PR needs including photography and videography 


DATABASE/GUEST LIST MANAGEMENT

  • Curate guest lists, tailoring audience for partner and brand requirements, maximizing reach
  • Use software to create guest lists for events and communicate with guests on details
  • Track RSVPs for each event and ensure new attendees are added to Surface database 


QUALIFICATIONS

  • 3-5 years experience producing events in NYC or other large metropolitan areas (Miami, LA, Chicago, Washington DC); experience producing events across multiple cities nationally and internationally preferred
  • Expertise in utilizing various event and guest management software and its application including Zkipster, Splash, Salesforce Marketing Cloud required
  • Strong ability to negotiate partnership agreements on behalf of the brand

  • Ensuring that contributors adhere to brand guidelines and creative direction

  • Managing relationships with contributors

  • Working with the production manager to make sure that contributors have signed all documents needed for compensation

  • Managing budgets, constantly assessing best contributor, production style, and equipment for the job, using strong negotiation skills when necessary


In-house Production:

  • Research, source and acquire all pickup media for Surface Media content projects

  • Work with editors from across the company to ensure each story includes the best and most appropriate media

  • Select and edit photos in each publication with oversight from the Design Director

  • Shoot several columns per publication/outlet, as well as photo/video assets for social media

  • Be responsible for any light retouching and color-correcting before photos are published for shoots, pickup, and in-house media.

  • Ensuring that our media is of high quality, resolution, focus, clarity, and the like.

  • Finalize short video pieces, as well as video shot in-house or by editors, working with freelancers when necessary


Photo and video management:

  • Management and organization of media storage and archiving

  • Management of image production via outsourcing partners to prepare images to spec for print and digital usage

  • Management of video production when external videographers and editors are used

  • Management of other relevant freelancers when a project requires them


Equipment:

  • Manage all company photo and video equipment including cameras, lenses, etc.

  • Set up and manage an in-house photo/video studio


Writing:

  • Write captions, or oversee the writing of captions, for all photos used in each Surface Media publication

  • Compile photo/video credits and ensure their correct usage across channels

  • Write briefs for photographers and videographers under the guidance of the Design Director

  • Compile and distribute call sheets for all shoots

  • Prepare production plans for complex shoots with input from various teams involved

  • Manage our creative contracts, updating when needed


Social Media

  • Help ensure a high level of image and video quality across our social media channels, as well as produce original content for each of our brands


Events

  • Work with the marketing and events teams to confirm consistent photography and video talent and execution for all Surface Media events

  • Shoot photo and video for Surface Media events as needed


REQUIREMENTS

  • 3–5 years of industry experience (working at a magazine, media company, digital/advertising agency, etc.)

  • Bachelor’s degree in Photography or related arts/media/applied communication field

  • A portfolio of own photography, plus tears/examples of work produced/edited at previous jobs. Video and social media examples are a plus.

  • A passion for photography, portraiture, film and visual storytelling

  • Knowledge of Surface Media and its diverse properties, with active interest in the arenas that we cover, and experience researching them for content (design, architecture, fashion, travel, etc.)

  • Relationships with a range of photographers and video contributors to bring fresh talent to our creative pool

  • Resourcefulness, diligence, attention to detail, creative problem-solving, and organizational skills, plus strong interpersonal, communication, and negotiation skills

  • Ability to manage multiple projects both daily and long-term, and to adapt to changing priorities

  • Excellent skills in Adobe Photoshop, Bridge, and Lightroom

  • Working knowledge of InDesign and InCopy

  • Working knowledge of video editing and effects with Adobe After Effects or Premiere

  • Knowledge of camera operation, lighting, and sound setup

  • Knowledge of best and fastest practices for photo/video quality, enhancement, and processing

  • Passion for following and integrating latest trends and developments in visual content creation
