Surface Media is a storytelling company that looks at the world through the lens of design. It includes print magazines Surface and Watch Journal; digital platforms at surfacemag.com and watchjournal.com; a custom publishing division, Surface Studios; a designer focused representation agency, Culture+Commerce; and a highly regarded event program including the Design Dialogues series. Surface is launching several new initiatives and is looking for creative and motivated individuals to join its growing team. Watch Journal celebrated its 20th anniversary in 2017 and Surface magazine is celebrating its 25th anniversary in 2018.


The List editor is responsible for leading the overall content strategy for The List, Surface’s definitive directory of companies producing exemplary design. You’ll play a fundamental role in developing best-in-class digital content that speaks to our design-conscious community while showcasing the work of our List members. 


  • Responsible for the overall content strategy for The List across digital, social, print, and multimedia channels
  • Shape the editorial strategy and positioning of The List to grow readership and membership
  • Develop and brainstorm creative concepts for daily, weekly, and monthly content rubrics
  • Write, edit, produce, and assign content, including articles with multimedia features, digital stories, product roundups, and newsletters
  • Oversee social media content and strategy as it pertains to The List
  • Communicate directly with The List community to find out news, product launches, and other information to inform editorial content
  • Liaise with client services team in creating member pages by writing and editing brand endorsements and completing final review of profiles
  • Assist sales team in approving new List prospects as necessary
  • Work with marketing and events teams to define initiatives that will create touch points for members and create a sense of community
  • Contribute to the overall growth strategy of The List product and offering


  • 5+ years of content creation
  • Experience developing digital content from a strategic and creative perspective
  • Strong understanding of SEO
  • Ability to manage cross-functional projects in a fast-paced environment
  • Copywriting and creative editing experience
  • A background in design, fashion, or marketplace content a plus
