Digital Marketing Analyst


Surface Media is a storytelling company that looks at the world through the lens of design. It includes print magazines Surface and Watch Journal; digital platforms at and; a custom publishing division, Surface Studios; a designer focused representation agency, Culture+Commerce; and a highly regarded event program including the Design Dialogues series. Surface is launching several new initiatives in 2017 and is looking for creative and motivated individuals to join its growing team. Watch Journal is celebrating its 20th anniversary in 2017 and Surface magazine will celebrate its 25th anniversary in 2018.

Position Overview

The Digital Marketing Analyst reports to the Executive Director, Communications and Marketing and works closely across all teams and with members of the marketing department to oversee all email and social media marketing campaigns, manage and grow the company’s user database, strategize on how to utilize the data in most effective and efficient ways, and providing strong analytics to the various teams within the company to inform decision making and strategy.



• Own day-to-day measurement, reporting, and optimization recommendations for subscriber, partner, and membership acquisition and create weekly reports for leadership on overall audience growth and engagement

• Provide recommendations to clients on meeting their goals, monitor performance of display ads/digital paid content, and prepare detailed reports for partners following digital/social campaigns

• Identify best practices and opportunities to maximize revenue and total profit potential for all marketing activities

• Work with various data sets to design reports tracking key business performance and subscriber trends across traditional and digital platforms

• Help identify marketing KPIs, estimate expected value, and assess marketing performance of all outreach initiatives

Email Marketing

• Oversee all outreach strategy for email and social media campaigns on behalf of Surface Media’s marketing team and its clients/partners

• Advise team on strategies to grow digital subscribers

• Analyze, measure, and report on the success of marketing campaigns using KPIs to ensure efforts have yielded significant results

• Manage lists and segmentation for all email newsletters to ensure targeting appropriate audiences

• Present insights to marketing team on day to day basis to inform strategy adjustment as needed

Social Media

• Work to create a robust social media strategy informed by goals of marketing, partnerships, and editorial teams that will consistently grow traffic and engagement

• Create and maintain a social media calendar and posting schedule with input from all areas of company

• Develop and implement marketing strategies that optimize Surface Media’s social media accounts including Facebook, LinkedIn, Twitter, and Instagram for growing and engaging audience

• Work closely with editorial team on content marketing efforts and integrating editorial promotion within overall plan

• Oversee all social media platforms for Surface Media and engage in conversations and answer questions as needed/appropriate on these platforms

• Propose and manage social budget and analyze, plan, execute, and optimize paid advertising

• Develop benchmark metrics to measure the results of social media programs

• Produce daily reports on effectiveness of campaigns

• Monitor social space for brand and related topics and conversations and respond as needed


• Bachelor’s degree and 3+ years of experience in digital marketing as an analyst and/or strategist

• Strong analytic thinker with experience in extracting data from a variety of sources

• Expertise in SEO and deep knowledge of all social media platforms

• Expertise in web analytics tools including Google analytics

• Expertise in social media best practices and social media analytics software (Hootsuite, Raven Tools, Google Analytics, Facebook Insights, Sprout Social, etc.)

• Expertise in managing social media paid advertising

• Working knowledge of digital marketing automation tools specifically Marketo and Salesforce Marketing Cloud

• Understanding of data visualization and tools

• Acute visual intelligence and understanding of basic design principles

• Ability to multi-task, operate effectively under changing conditions and rigorously prioritize initiatives based on business objectives

• Excellent communication skills both verbal and written

• Experience managing multiple stakeholder objectives

• Working knowledge of cultural media landscape and working knowledge of art, fashion, design, and architecture press preferred

• Sense of humor, positive attitude, and ability to shift gears quickly and to handle a fast-paced environment
