Surface Media is a storytelling company that looks at the world through the lens of design. It includes print magazines Surface and Watch Journal; digital platforms at surfacemag.com and watchjournal.com; a custom publishing division, Surface Studios; a designer focused representation agency, Culture+Commerce; and a highly regarded event program including the Design Dialogues series. Surface is launching several new initiatives in 2017 and is looking for creative and motivated individuals to join its growing team. Watch Journal is celebrating its 20th anniversary in 2017 and Surface magazine will celebrate its 25th anniversary in 2018.


Overview


Surface Media is looking for an ambitious, go-getting Social Media Editor to join our growing team in our New York offices. Reporting to the News Editor, the Social Media Editor will be responsible for setting and executing our social strategies, working with both the edit and marketing teams to increase our social footprint across all platforms, including (but not limited to) Facebook, Instagram, LinkedIn, and Twitter. A strong knowledge of social media is essential. An interest in art, design, architecture, and fashion is preferred.


Responsibilities


  • Manage day-to-day social media activities across all social channels, including (but not limited to) Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, and LinkedIn

  • Define and maintain the brand voice and vision throughout all conversations

  • Create highly shareable multimedia stories (memes, hashtags, videos, GIFs, images, and other social-first content) across platforms that attracts attention, generates interest, and encourages sharing among our followers

  • Manage and execute social strategy during live events

  • Stay current and forward thinking on new social media tools and platforms and best practices

  • Report to News Editor; collaborate closely with entire editorial team

  • Work closely with Digital Marketing Manager to set aggressive goals for growth and engagement; develop plans to meet these goals


Requirements


  • Bachelor’s Degree

  • At least one year of social media experience at a media company or at a brand

  • Understanding of the digital and social media universe including Instagram, YouTube, Snapchat, Facebook, Twitter, Tumblr, Pinterest, and LinkedIn, among others

  • Early adopter of new and emerging social media platforms—passionate about both being a user/consumer of social content as well as an analyst/strategist

  • Some experience with using Google Analytics, Sprout Social, Parse.ly or other similar tools in social media reporting capacity

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills

  • Ability to work individually on a project and collaborate to a team environment

  • Ability to adapt to changing priorities based on organizational needs

  • Attention to detail and ability to manage multiple projects at once

  • Understanding of Surface’s voice and sensibility
